Moog muSonics Sonic V Analog Synthesizer serial#74

"This auction is for a Moog muSonics Sonic V. It has 2 osc's (saw, tri, square/pulse) 2 lfo's (saw, ramp, tri square) a ring modulator, a noise generator (white or pink), an external input, 2 outputs and 2 built in speakers. The speakers can be bypassed by using the second output. It is monophonic (plays one note at a time) and/or duophonic (plays two notes at a time). It even has a 'scale' knob on the front panel so it can play microtones I suggest having a tech range/scale this synth as it is, at all ranges, a little out of tune (listen to the audio). It wasn't an issue for me but it might be for you.

The Sonic V has a 24db diode filter which is very expressive. It has that Moog sound when you want it, but you can also have it sound quite different. It can sound more gritty or aggressive then other synths containing the traditional Moog 24db transistor ladder filter thanks to the diode filter design and also to the addition of the ring modulator. It has a 4 octave keybed that is a pleasure to play on. The keys play like new and the synth is quite stable. This synth is in perfect shape inside, and fair/decent shape outside. Please check out the pictures and videos to see the condition of the wood/metal and notice that it is missing a few plastic slider caps/knobs. The most noticeable marks are a slight dent in the metal faceplate top center and the wood at the right front corner is damaged/chipped in two places... I've done some research over the the past few months and I believe this synth was built in 1971 and that less then a few dozen were ever made. I would give the exterior a 7 out of 10. and the inside a 10 out of 10. (These are my opinions!) The instruments functions all work 100% however there is a low level high pitched whine in the output. Whenever I use this synth I just use a noise gate. I've had lots of fun owning this synth and wish that its next owner enjoys it as much as I have. Please see the pictures and enjoy the videos." "I just bought this great synth over the weekend, and I'm noticing there's not much info to be found about it anywhere. So, here's a video of some of what it can do. Its sound is slightly different from the typical 24db Moog filter you're used to hearing (it uses diodes instead of transistors).
The Sonic V has 2 oscillators (saw, tri, square with pulse width), 2 lfo's, an A/D generator with a toggle for sustain. Its duophonic (can play 2 notes at a time) and has a switch for mono. It's 4 octave keyboard is great to play on, but one could miss having a pitch and mod wheel. It's not really a performance synth, more of a studio piece. It was first designed as a teaching tool and later morphed into the Sonic Six. It has 2 built in speakers and some exciting words printed on its face like TRANSIENT and GLISSANDO so what's not to like! It does have some minor issues that I'll try to fix before making another video of it. I tried a noise gate on its perpetual high pitch whine but you'll hear it here and there throughout the video (my appologies). Maybe I should have mic'd it, the speakers sound crystal clear.
Judge for yourself, I think it sounds great, and with less then 100 ever made, it's quite collectible. Enjoy!"

Moog muSonics Sonic V Short 2 Track Demo

"This is just a 30 second clip of the Sonic V I picked up last month. The keybed is much faster to play on then any other vintage synth I've owned. Between having 2 lfos, a ring mod, a 4 octave keybed and a 24db diode filter, this synth really offers quite a unique playing experience."

  1. It sounds VERY nice, but I cant help but hear a ringing sound in the background. I would not be able to use this synth in a recording without getting rid of that ringing noise.
