Recent Round of Ebay Scams

Just a heads up, it looks like a recent round of eBay scams focused on synths are going up again. I do my best to filter these out, but sometimes I miss them when I let my guard down. The following three appear to have been bogus:
Minimoog with Koa Wood
Synclavier 6400 System with Keyboard
ROLAND JUPITER 8 / JP-8 SN 110897

The first is still on eBay with 4 bids. The second two have already been pulled.  Usually they have an embedded gif like the above with a low Buy it Now and request to contact them offline.  I didn't see these when I posted the three, so I'm wondering if they were added later, or if I'm just losing my mind.  Anyway, keep an eye out for them.  Always buy through eBay and use your credit card through Paypal if you can.  If Paypal doesn't take care of it for you, your CC company should.   Never give your personal info to the seller and avoid communication outside of eBay if you suspect anything. They might be after more than the $1800. Also be careful of people trying to string you along past the eBay feedback period.  I got scammed once on a Prophet-5 that way.  The seller convinced me to drop it off at a tech friend of his who actually had a valid shop and listing in the phone book.  By the time I got it back unfixed it was too late to leave any negative feedback.

Another scam that appears to be going on is one where the "seller" contacts you offline on an eBay auction you didn't win and offers to sell it to you because the winner backed down.

Thanks goes to Joakim for catching the Jupiter and Sergey for the heads up.

  1. I've been the target of a couple of those "second chance" scams. Stupidly, they once targeted me for an auction where I was the winning bidder. It's safer to NEVER deal with a "second chance" offer.

  2. Great that we are informed about these scams, but I don't understand the fixation with this blog to post just about any auction on eBay involving synths. I come to Matrixsynth to connect with the synth community. To find out what people are doing with electronic instruments and to learn. It's tiresome to wade through all the eBay posts. I can understand if the post concerns a rare synth on eBay, but I don't see the value of posting that there's yet another SCI Six-Track on eBay. I know this comment is a little off topic, so I apologize in advance.

  3. Not everything goes up here. It might seem like that sometimes, but that's not the case. See the eBay links in the More Stuff section on the right an you will see. What does go up are decent pics, rare items, mods, interesting bits of history and what people send in. As far as the "not so interesting bits", it's payback - a way of me thanking the visitors of the site by posting and promoting what they have to offer. I don't know if you've ever sent anything in or listed anything on eBay, but when you do, you are free to send it in as well. If it doesn't meet the bar here on M, it will go up on B. As for the items in the post above, the Mini in Koa is nice, Synclaviers are rare, and the Jupiter-8 is well a Jupiter-8 with nice pics.

The problem with this site or any other for that matter is you can't please everyone. I get emails from people now and then asking me not to post circuit bent and noise stuff, then I get email thanking me for posting it. I get email from people asking me not to post Jean-Michel Jarre covers, then I get people thanking me for it. The best thing you can do is to realize different people have different tastes. I post the most interesting items I come across along with what readers send in. You don't have to consume it all, just consume what you want and skip the rest. It's not difficult to scroll past a post that does not interest you. Just realize what interests you does not necessarily interest others.

  4. I hear you Matrix. I just figured I'd give my opinion in case MANY others felt the same way I did about the auction postings, but I'm fine if I'm in the minority.

  5. Minority kind of rules here when you think about it. If Majority did, there wouldn't be much to post.

To reduce spam, comments for posts older than one week are not displayed until approved, usually same day. Do not insult people. For items for sale, do not ask if it is still available. Check the auction link and search for the item. Auctions are from various sellers and expire over time. Posts remain for the pics and historical purposes. This site is meant to be a daily snapshot of some of what was out there in the world of synths.
