ReplyDeleteSee the Starkey label for how it can be used in a modular, synth context. You'll find some video. I can't speak for the film, but I can speak for the use of instruments in the world of synths as featured on this site. Those that have followed the site know I don't really draw distinctions based on labels. Just because it was designed for one purpose does not mean it can't be used for others. That actually makes it stand out more in my opinion. The idea is to get people thinking outside of the box. If a piece of gear can be used to create and/or manipulate synthetic electronic sound it's fair game. Circuit bending, tape, effect pedals, and even guitars and mechanical hardware instruments are often featured on the site for this reason. Note this applies to posts and not the IDOW contest. Although the Starkey is lab equipment, it can be used in the modular synth world so I'm guessing that is why it was considered. The orchid in the shot is a good analogy. Orchids can be drastically different from each other to the point you might think they are not the same, yet they are all orchids. The Starkey is not labeled a modular synth, but rather a piece of test equipment, and it can be used in a modular synth context. The same could be said of some of the first devices used in electronic music including sinewave generators, oscillators, and you could even say some modulars and synthesizers were initially designed and used as educational sound labs, closer in context to lab equipment than musical instruments.
