In the Mattson Dungeon with the Monster Mattson EML System

Doug Lynner, Stephen Golovnin & George Mattson in the sonic dungeon of Mattson Mini Modular studios.

The massive system they are playing is the mighty Mattson EML modular. It consists of vintage EML components and new designs from George Mattson. You can find a ton of pics and info on the Mattson EML channel label here.

George Mattson of course is the man behind Mattson Mini Modular as well as being responsible for the "M" in the Synthrotek MST line.

Doug Lynner is a Serge maestro and has been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH numerous times with his Mystery Serge.

Stephen Golovnin aka Vsyevolod used to work at Serge back in the early days when they were based out of Los Angeles (above the wig shop here). He performs live with his massive eight panel Serge system and has been present at a number of synth meets.

June Noodle 2012 on the Monster Mattson EML Modular System

"A bunch of people visited me one day in June 2012 and I had this patch set up. So, I played it for them.

It utilized my EML modular, two Mattson/ Division 6 SQ816 sequencers, and Alesis QS8 and an Alesis SR-16.

They wanted me to mix it and upload the recording I had made of it the night before. It took a while. But, here it is."

I was there.  :)

$5 Synth Art From the Creator of The Packrat

David Lovelace of umop.com and creator of The Packrat is doing something really cool.  He came up with the idea of creating one off pieces of art on a bar napkin for 5 bucks!   The way it works is you Paypal $5 to dave at fark dot com with a description of what you want, and he comes up with the drawing.  That's right, you can have him create you your own personal, one of a kind bit of art for $5 on a napkin.  You can find some of what has come in so far on his Facebook page here.  BTW, it doesn't have to be a synth as you'll see in his other creations, but if you do get one with a synth, send it in!  I'll post it!

Pictured here:
"George C Mattson [Mattson Mini Modular] doubled down on his investment to get a more involved Bar Napkin Drawing of my Packrat character standing near his prized modular synthesizer. Would you like me to draw something for you? Paypal $5 to dave at fark dot com!"

BTW, people that have been following MATRIXSYNTH should immediately recognize the giant Mattson EML. See the label below if you haven't seen it in the flesh.

syncing the mattson mini modular sq816 sequencer with a daw

Published on Jan 20, 2013 hewstigator·22 videos

"i had to sync my mattson sequencer to my digital audio workstation to start using it on recordings of my band (thenewlines.bandcamp.com), and since the firmware doesn't yet sync over the USB input, i decided to take a quarter note pulse into an envelope follower, and then send that envelope into my sequencer's clock in. seems to work great, and it's a pretty great application for the humble built-in soundcard on my laptop that usually doesn't get any use when i'm recording music. here's a quick demo!"

A Visit to the Mattson Mini Modular Studio - Pics Part 2

As promised here is the second set of pics from my visit to George Mattson's studio. We had some particularly good wine. :)

This set was taken with an iPhone 4S. You can catch my previous post with pics taken on a Canon Rebel T2i here. A final post with video will follow when I have some time to upload it - it ate up a 4G SD card.

P.S. Giving this one the holidays label.  The Mattson EML all lit up is about as close as it gets to a synthmas tree imo.  Note the Mini Mattson Modular to it's right.  Enjoy the pics.  :)  Some of these make for great wallpaper.

A Visit to the Mattson Mini Modular Studio

I recently paid a visit to George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular. Posted here is a collection of pics I took.  Click them for the full size glory, these are big pics.  I'll be posting a few more along with video of George taking me through the new Divison 6 Mattson SQ816 Sequencer (Mattson page here).  George Mattson designed the hardware, while Division-6 did the software.   Along with the Mattson and Division 6 eurorack formats, it will be available as a stand alone desktop sequencer.

This thing is going to be a beast.  If you are in the market for a hardware sequencer you are going to want to check this one out.   One thing I really like about the Mattson SQ816 is the individual gate outs for each step.  You can have a 16 step sequence with the main out driving the main sequence while having each step drive different drum modules.   In essence you get a main melody sequencer as well as 16 drum triggers.  You can of course gate anything including non percussive sounds.   The sequencer also supports MIDI out.

Also pictured is George's giant EML Mattson modular. It consists of vintage EML components and new designs from George Mattson. It is a monster. See the Mattson EML label for more, and don't miss the light show. :)  To the right of the EML Mattson modular and in the other pics you'll see the Mattson Mini Modular in different case formats. A eurorack system sits on a shelf over the long horizontal case.

2nd set of pics here.

Here is the Maker, jamming for a moment. Oh and when I zoom over to all the Mattson Mini Modulars, those are all being used for what you're hearing as well :D"

The Plugin Guru Visits Mattson Studio

Two pics of George Mattson's studio by John Lhmkuhl of pluginguru.com.

via John Lhmkuhl on Facebook:

"That silver modular is over 30 years in the making! To the right, are 'downsized' versions of the Goliath silver modular in Euro Rack and his own Mattson Mini Modular format. What a treat to watch George fire all these modules up!"

"George got into the synthesizer world when he invented the syntar 34 years ago YESTERDAY - I'm holding (and playing) the very FIRST Syntar that George created. I was also given an introduction to many of the cool modules that George has created including a really powerful sequencer (in the background behind my Left Hand is a whole bunch of Mattson Mini Modular modules, all making beautiful music!) The Analog synthesizer world is very much alive in the Pacific Northwest!"

MMTA SUMMER SYNTHFEST 2012 Pics by MATRIXSYNTH

MMTA SUMMER SYNTHFEST 2012

And my set of pics. :) This wraps up MATRIXSYNTH's direct coverage of the event. If you have pics, video or audio, please feel free to send it in. See the MMTA SYNTHFEST 2012 label for all posts on the event including a couple of video walk-throughs. There's a lot to see in this set but don't miss the slick plexi-glass modular cases by James Husted of Synthwerks, the Din Sync Dr. Protomonger, the new Mattson SQ16 Sequencer which will be available in Euro by Division 6, and of course the massive MATRIXSYNTH Banner! Now that's synth bling. You can find the full list of exhibitors in this post.

PS, on some browsers, Flickr embedding will sometimes cause your mouse to wig out and disappear. If this happens, move your invisible mouse to the edge of the screen and hit the esc key. It should come back. You can then click on the top of the browser and refresh the page to get things back to normal. It's annoying but the slideshow is worth it imo. You might want to view this one full screen. If you want to skip it and go straight to Flickr though, here's a link.

MMTA SYNTHFEST - Now That's What You Call a Modular

via Asher Fulero on Facebook

"Next to us... making it hard to stay focused! — with George C Mattson, Matrixsynth Jones, Steve Turnidge, James Husted and Scott Rise." And John L Rice! to the right. :)

Incredible shot featuring George Mattson reaching the top of his custom EML modular (See the Mattson EML label below for more posts on the system). That is one massive system with some custom work from George.

To the immediate right you can see three cases of his Mattson Mini Modular Phoenix series. They pack a ton of power in a small space.

The system further to the right belongs to John L Rice and includes modules from Moon Modular, Modcan, and others. I'll have some close-up pics coming, and of course check out the previous post for some close-ups via Larry Kleinke aka Computer Controlled.
