RARE! KORG WAVESTATION EX and KORG WAVESTATION A/D Original VHS Promo Video from 1991

video upload by WayneJoness

"When I first moved to Los Angeles I got a job working for Joe Goodman at the flagship Goodman Music store on Cahuenga Blvd. We were advised to specialize and I became the 'Wavestation' guy. I bought one myself and used it on every music project I worked on. I tried to sell a Wavestation to everyone who walked into Goodman Music. The night I brought home my Wavestation was magical. This was synthesis on a whole new level. Korg distributed VHS tapes to educate the public on the Wavestation EX and A/D units. I saved mine and decided to upload this video. I had a great time working at Goodman Music where I got a lot of opportunities to meet some great musicians. And the staff was great, I particularly liked working with Galen Walker and Michael 'Doc' Dosco who I kept in touch with for years, and manager Jim Mona."

Roland Vintage Analog Guitar Synthesizer Adjustment Setup GR-300 G-303 G-808 Max Performance

video upload by WayneJoness

"This video is going to show you how to adjust the guitar synth pickup height and sensitivity on a vintage Roland guitar synth controller.

The proper adjustment of the guitar synth pickup height and sensitivity is key to getting the best performance from a vintage Roland guitar synth. These adjustments apply to all the vintage controllers, from the GS-505, G-202, 303, 505, 707, 808 and the GK-1 as well as the Ibanez IMG2010.

Roland Super JX-10 Original Factory Patches Demo - With Ibanez SDR-1000 - Mozart Rondo Alla Turca

video upload by WayneJoness

"Original Factory Patches from the Roland Super JX-10. I recorded this in 1986 using my Roland JX-10 with the Ibanez SDR-1000 stereo reverb. I sequenced Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca using Voyetra's Sequencer Plus. On playback I randomly switched different patches on the JX-10 and SDR-1000, going directly to cassette tape. I edited some of the beginning as I did not start changing the patches until a bit of a way into the piece. I am amazed at how expression the JX-10 is, responding only to changes in key velocity.

These are dual, layered patches. You can really hear the stereo sound, and the Ibanez SDR-1000 was a true stereo reverb with an independent reverb for the left and right channels. You can also hear some of the non-linear patches from the SDR-1000 like gated reverb."

Roland GR-300 Analog Guitar Synthesizer - Pro Tip - Super Filter Modulation w/ Expression Ramper

video upload by WayneJoness

"The GR-300 lacks Filter Modulation, a staple of Analog Synthesizers. This video shows how to use the OBNE, Old Blood Noise Effects - Expression Ramper to modulate the GR-300 filter using the filter pedal input in the GR-300.

A big shout out to Ian Thompson who brought this to my attention! Thanks Ian!

Boss SY-1000 Resynthesis - Reamping - Next Level Guitar Synth USB Six Split Outputs

video by WayneJoness

"https://www.joness.com/gr300/SY-1000.htm [some pics of the inside there] One of the breakthrough features of the Boss SY-1000 is access to the individual string inputs and outputs in the USB audio stream. With this feature you can record a guitar performance into your DAW then freely experiment with using different SY-1000 patches on the recorded track. Boss calls this resynthesis.

This is similar to the process of reamping, where a guitar signal is recorded dry then played back, or 'reamped' through different amplifiers. But resynthesis takes this to a whole new level, since you can not only change the amplifier, but the kind of guitar used on a track, switching from a Strat to a Les Paul, or Acoustic, or even a Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer. With each string recorded individually there is also a whole new level of editing and creativity available as well. You can literally correct the performance of one note without having to punch in on the entire performance."

Audio Damage ADM17 Proton DEMO - No EFX - Karplus-Strong Tuned Delay Line Physical Modelling Synth

WayneJoness

"This is a demonstration video of the rare Audio Damage ADM17. The ADM-17 was triggered by the Korg/Arp 2600 3620 keyboard sequencer. No effects were used, this is the sound of the direct output from the Proton. Adjusting the Decay, Imp Filter, Imp Decay, Damping and Sub controls produces a wide range of sound, from crisp FM-like bass sounds, to very ragged aggressive tones. All with just the one module, no additional filtering or processing is using. Even more can be accomplished by using the CV inputs for the various controls to animate the sound. But just clean and dry this is a pretty impressive stand alone Eurorack synth module.
I purchased the unit second hand and have difficultly with getting the unit to boot up. The ADM17 has a microprocessor, and 9/10 times it will not power up. When it does, the front panel blue LED flashes, and you are in business. I supplied an external gate and pitch CV from the 3620, but you do not need anything to make sounds (when it is working), just press the front panel manual trigger button. I tried using the unit as a stand alone delay, but the delay time is very short. Good for synthesis, not so good for effects.
I wish this unit was still in production, and there was more information available. There is a USB port on the unit for software updates as well.
This is a very powerful unit, I would think it would be in more racks if people had a chance to hear what the unit is capable of."

Roland SPV-355 P/V (Pitch-to-Voltage) Synthesizer - Demo with Guitar

WayneJoness

"The SPV-355 is the forgotten brother to the much more familiar Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizer. Look inside the GR-300 owner’s manual on page 10, and you will see a reference to the Roland SPV-355 Synthesizer. The manual reads:

"When a solo type synthesizer sound is desired, try the Roland P/V Synthesizer SPV-355. Use the NORMAL OUTPUT on the Guitar controller, or use the GUITAR OUTPUT from the GR-300." - Roland GR-300 Manual

I was very curious to check out the SPV-355. Does it share the same fantastic tracking as the G-300? How does it compare to other Roland guitar and MIDI synthesizers? Does it have the same analog tone as the GR-300?

In short, the SPV-355 falls short on tracking when compared to the GR-300. A look through the service notes revealed a tracking system much more like the GR-700 than the acclaimed GR-300. The tradeoff here is that the SPV-355 offers three different waveforms, for a much more flexible sound. The synthesizer section is very much a classic analog synthesizer, and the SPV-355 has rear panel control voltage inputs, allowing it to also work as a stand-alone analog synthesizer expansion module. In addition, there are CV outputs as well, so that the SPV-355 can be used to drive any standard 1 volt/octave analog synthesizer."

Pat Metheny - New England Digital Synclavier Demonstration - Old Grey Whistle Test - Roland G-303

WayneJoness

"Pat Metheny - New England Digital Synclavier Demonstration - Old Grey Whistle Test - Roland G-303 Super rare footage from the British television show 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'. I believe the clip was pulled for years as the original broadcast included the tune 'Tell It All', from 'First Circle' and this was blocked by WBM Group from being shown on YouTube. Great to have it back!"

Parker NiteFly SA Guitar with Factory Roland Ready GK-2A and Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer

Published on Jan 31, 2020 WayneJoness

"In August of 2006 I found this really, really rare Parker NiteFly SA guitar on ebay. This was a stunning NiteFly SA with a factory installed Roland GK-2A kit. I have never seen one of these before or since. As the Roland kit was factory installed, all the controls, knobs, etc. fit seamless with the standard controls. This NiteFly SA was a true jack-of-all-trades guitar. In addition to the sweet custom DiMarzio pickups, the guitar also had a Fishman pickup installed for acoustic tones. And topping everything off was the Roland 13 pin GK output as well.

In my MIDI speed tests, this guitar has proven to be a real tracking champion as well. Response time was a blazing 15.96 milliseconds using the Roland GI-20 Pitch-to-MIDI converter. This is a tracking speed that is on par with the latest technology available.

In the video, you can see the guitar demonstrated with the Roland GR-300. At the time I was making the RC-1324-PDL, a pedal that accepted a modern 13-pin input and supplied a vintage 24-pin output. The pedal included trimmers for each string, plus two filter preset settings, modulation control and resonance, as well as output presets. The pedal needed to replicate the controls found on a vintage guitar synth controller which are not a part of the GK-2/GK-3 design. You can hear the guitar controlling a Roland GR-100, GR-300 and GR-700.

As much as I loved the sound and flexibility of this guitar, I was never able to adjust to the thin, carbon fibre neck. Do not get me wrong, the neck is awesome, with its stainless steel frets and dead-on intonation. But I found the neck a little fatiguing, as I really prefer a fatter neck. And so, like many guitars, it eventually left and found another owner courtesy of ebay."

Parker NiteFly SA with Factory Internal Roland GK-2A and Roland GR-700 Analog Guitar Synthesizer

Published on Jan 31, 2020 WayneJoness

"This video demonstrates using a Parker NiteFly SA with a factory Roland GK-2A internal pickup. This is a rare guitar, with the Roland electronics installed at the factory. This is the same pickup as found in the original Fender Roland Ready guitars. A RC-1324 converter is used to boost the signals from the Roland 13-pin output to be compatible with the 24-pin system. This enables the Parker NiteFly SA to play a vintage Roland GR-700 Analog guitar synthesiter."

Theme From MASH - Arp Odyssey - 70s Science Fiction SciFi SF Version Ambient Space Music

Published on Mar 30, 2019 WayneJoness

"The theme from MASH as realized using only an Arp Odyssey analog synthesizer. The idea came from my friend science fiction author Ron Rogers who wrote alternate SF lyrics ('Landing on a virgin world, I see the battle flag unfurled'). This was 40 years(!) ago, and Ron suggested I do an arrangement with my new Arp synth. This project was never finished, so when Korg reissued the Arp Odyssey, I picked up the idea again. To keep this very '70s' sounding I used the Odyssey for all instruments, drums, sound effects, etc. Enjoy! And thanks to Ron for the original idea!"
