Published on Dec 22, 2012 by CoolColJ

"Second week on the way to getting back into shape - BBall while on an intermittent fast

Currently 100kg 220lbs with a 31 inch jump. Hopefully end up at 70-75kg 165lbs and 40+ inch jump :)

The music I did on a Roland Jupiter 8 synth"

Jupiter 8 Meditation

Jupiter 8 Meditation by CoolColJ
"Testing out my newly acquired Motu 24 I/O, using it as a replacement for my mixers, and getting carried away :)

Roland Jupiter 8 bliss.... with classic Lexicon reverb, then compressed by AlexB's DTE tube mastering compressor in Nebula."

Alesis Andromeda doing a Minimoog impression

Alesis Andromeda doing a Minimoog impression by CoolColJ
"This reminds me of a MiniMoog

I find that the feedback used in place of the actual filter resonance to be better than 24db filter resonance when used in series.
Used the 12db filter inline with the 24db to overdrive it, with and without feedback. Keep the ENV3 (Amp/VCA) level low under 80, I used 56 here, and the level knob on the far right under 80 as well. Gets rid of that harsh sound, especially as resonance is cranked up.

A6 doesn't have much head room compared to the discrete designs it was based on - even then when low levels are used, the noise isn't a problem, no worst than a JP8 for example, your just clipping it less :)"

"Excuse the bad playing :)

Emulating Oberheim and SE Omega/Code voice spread in U-He Diva
Used the state variable filters - which I guess are modelled after the Oberheim SEM"

Alesis Andromeda vs Roland Jupiter 8 - 24db Filters

Alesis Andromeda vs Roland Jupiter 8 - 24db Filters by CoolColJ
"A little comparison, using similar filter settings, with 2 sawtooth waves, an octave apart.
I also mixed the A6's analog distortion at very low levels into the main output to add a bit of grit and "definition"

You can tell the A6 has a more Moog style 24db filter. JP8 is definitely very Roland sounding....."

Alesis Andromeda latched arpeggiator into HPF-LPF delay jam

Alesis Andromeda latched arpeggiator into HPF-LPF delay jam by CoolColJ
"Messing around on the Andromeda.

raw output directly into my audio interface - unprocessed
Dual sawtooth waves into 12db high pass filter and a 24db low pass filter in series, with a touch of filter feedback.
Delay is also from the Andromeda - mimicking tape delay

Something about the Andromeda's main outs sounds like analog tape - kinda like a Studer in sound :)"

Alesis Andromeda Analog Drums & Techno

Alesis Andromeda Analog Drums by CoolColJ

Alesis Andromeda Techno by CoolColJ

Description for both: "An old A6 demo track I did 10 years ago.

All the sounds and drums were from the Andromeda, fired in real time over midi in multi mode. No external processing and effects added"

Juno 106 Chorus vs Behringer CC300 pedal

Juno 106 Chorus vs Behringer CC300 pedal by CoolColJ
"Juno 106 onboard analog chorus vs the Behringer CC300 analog chorus pedal. Not a true 1 to 1 comparo as there are level differences, but it gives you an idea.

Juno dry - chorus1, Chorus 2 - Dry again, CC300 button1, 2, 3, 4

Similar effect, but not quite as strong and thick sounding in the lower mids. Some EQ could help I suppose. But it doesn't take over the sound like the Juno chorus, and hiss as much :)"

The Behringer recordings sound a bit distorted. Curious if it is the recording or the pedal.

Alesis Andromeda into CC300 chorus pedal

Alesis Andromeda into CC300 chorus pedal by CoolColJ
"The humble Behringer CC300 chorus pedal gives the A6 some of that Juno vibe :)

First part uses the first button - lowest effect. 2nd and 3rd part uses first 2 buttons pressed at the same time, for a richer effect"

Jupiter 8 and Behringer CC300 Roland Analog Chorus Clone Demos

"Picked up a cheap as chips Behringer CC300 analog chorus pedal - which is supposedly a clone of a vintage Roland analog chorus box :)

I used it with a power adapter, better than with a battery, I've read.

Anyway source sound is a Jupiter 8 latched arp line, single VCO sawtooth.

Raw, then switched on pedal with no buttons pressed - lowest setting, then every 2 bars I switch in each button mode in turn, and then with all buttons pressed in at the same time"

"Tags: Roland Jupiter 8 pad behringer CC300 analog chorus pedal

Basic single VCO Jupiter 8 pad into Behringer CC300 analog chorus pedal with all mode buttons pressed in - strongest chorus effect I guess

A bit Juno like - not bad for $50!"

Short Technics WSA1 Jam with Ryan - "Garbage Truck" :)

YouTube Uploaded by CoolColJ on Jan 8, 2012

"Ryan loves his garbage trucks :)
I use the Technics WSA1 as a sort of master keyboard. Playing with a cutom sound/patch.
Was recorded well by the Canon G12's mic from the Event Opal speakers
Some Roland Jupiter 8 incidental music on the intro and outro"

JP8 vs U-He DIVA beta - ResoDualSAW - Echomania

JP8 vs U-He DIVA beta - ResoDualSAW - Echomania by CoolColJ
"Another little comparison between JP8 and U-He Diva beta

Running both through the freeware Echomania echo VST in real time in Reaper, recording it into Wavelab. U-He with max "divine" quality and using the modelled JP8 components

Diva does sound like it in a general way, but to does seem a bit more "plastic", lacking the extra richness and upper harmonics, brightness

Plus the Roland pitch stick is ace for filter tweaking, not quite the same with the Andromeda's mod wheel controlling Diva!"

JP8 vs U-He DIVA PWM comparison

JP8 vs U-He DIVA PWM comparison by CoolColJ
"Another simple comparo between JP8 and Diva. JP8 first in each case

single PWM wave, no resonance, wide open filter, decay and release on the VCA envelope

I used all the correct modules on Diva with the clean filter. 24 bit 4.1khz for both, "Divine" quality setting and 8 note poly for Diva

As I mentioned before there is a very noticable difference btween the envelopes of my recapped/calibrated JP8 and Diva.
JP8 just snaps and pokes out more and faster. There is this soft feeling on the attack of Diva.

The PWM on the JP8 is very distinctive it's what gives it it's swirling ethereal sound. Diva is really different sounding here.
Also JP8 significantly brighter, again as I said before. And a rougher more raw edge to real VCOs. That's something I always found that software is lacking - a bit too glossy and smooth."

Studio Electronics Omega Code 8 Polyphonic demo - Arp 2600 and CS80 filters

YouTube Uploaded by CoolColJ on Aug 4, 2011

"When I touch the big knob under the screen I'm changing the filter type or tweaking filter parameters for the CS80 filter

I picked up a fully loaded 4 month old Code 8 this week, with 8 Arp 2600 and 8 CS80 filters! I was up late last night playing it for hours....

Sounds a bit like an Oberheim OBX. When you turn on all the waveforms it will saturate a bit, so it's not super clean like everyone says.

Filter demo here

"Studio Electronics Omega Code8 Filter demo

A dual Sawtooth sequence
Order of filters - Moog, Arp2600, CS80, SEM LPF, SEM BPF, SEM HPF, SEM Band reject
then CS80 with it's High pass filter engaged and tweaked.

Then more normal playing with the filters in the same order more or less"

And CS80 filter demo

"Studio Electronics Code 8 CS80 filter demo

A little different from the ones posted from other people. I mix in the High Pass filter halfway through, with resonance on max. Not unlike the Andromeda's 12db filter in sound in some ways"

Arp2600 filter demo

"Someone requested a solo Arp2600 filter demo on the Code 8
here it is - there is some delay added, just to make it less boring

Single sawtooth, legato and glide some VCO2 to filter crossmodulation, sub-oscillator, then dual sawtooth

Soundcloud processing makes it a bit fuzzy - 24 bit original file download available"

A6 JP8 Live multi-track test

A6 JP8 Live multi-track test by CoolColJ
"Just a quick live multi-track, I did today to put my new Focal speakers through their paces
No EQ, minor delay from the A6, and a little reverb on 2 of the sounds.

The Alesis A6 Andromeda does the arpeggiator, Bass and the high riff on the left.
Everything else is the Jupiter 8.
I just used some A6 sounds I had previously programmed, and the same for the JP8 - a dual mode patch for the chords, but the resonant lead on the right was something I tweaked on the spot in manual mode.

A6 went through Speck Xtramix before going into the DAW. While the JP8 went straight in.

I think they go well together :)"
