Korg MS-20 tutorial: External sound processing Part 2

YouTube Published on May 25, 2012 by demokid2000
Audio comes in after one minute.

"This is part two of the Korg MS-20 external audio process tutorial. In this video we use the Trig Out in the EPS to trigger the Korg MS20 envelope. It's a bit trickier since you have to use two patch cords but it's quite easy.

In part three we use the envelope follower in the EPS section to control the envelope an external audio processing.

Korg MS-20 tutorial: External Sound Processing

Korg MS-20 tutorial: External sound processing Part 1

YouTube Published on May 23, 2012 by demokid2000

"I have read some posts on forums how to process external sounds thru a Korg MS 20. Yes it is very easy but some forget that you have to trigger the envelope to hear the processed sound. This can be done manually by playing the keyboard or via CV/Gate.
I decided to make a short tutorial how to process external audio thru the MS-20 playing the keyboard live. This is the easiest way to start.

In this demo the Elka Synthex plays a string sound and is controlled by MIDI.

You can also use the MS-20 Trig Out in the External Signal Processor section to trigger the envelope. You need some patch cords to achieve this. I will cover this in 'Korg MS-20 tutorial: External sound processing Part 2'."

Korg MS20 vs. Korg MS50 low pass filter test

YouTube Published on Apr 29, 2012 by demokid2000

"I finally got myself a Korg MS 50 semi modular synthesizer. I bought my Korg MS20 back in 1996 and I have always wanted a MS50 as a side kick. What I lack the most in the Korg MS20 is multipliers and pule wave modulation. Ok, the high pass filter and "ring modular" is great but you need multis in a patchable synth.

I just want to say one thing about the MS series... They are not complete. I thought an MS50 would fix everything I lack in the MS20... It doesn't. Both lack some very important "modules" to work 100% as a team

Anyway... They still sound great. I didn't think the low pass filter would sound that different! The MS20 VCF sounds smooth like cotton compared to the MS50 which is a lot harsher. The PWM on the MS50 is very melodic and nice sounding. I still have a lot to learn how to integrate the MS20 / 50 in my sound palette.

With this video I try to show how different the filter sounds. A very basic test and I'm afraid that youtube messed up the sound, there are some fizzle which is not present in the original file.

Korg MS 20 basic hand clap sound

YouTube Uploaded by demokid2000 on Apr 8, 2012

"I tried to make a sort of hand clap sound on the MS20. It is a very easy sound to create on the MS20 thanks to its lovely high pass filter with resonance. I also use a narrow pulse wave from the LFO which controls the low pass filter cut off to simulate several hands clapping not totally in sync.
I'm not totally satisfied with the result... a few more minutes of twisting knobs and you can get a descent hand clap sound.
Recorded with an iPhone4 and Fostex AR-4i"

Synthesizers.com modular synthesizer random sequence

YouTube Uploaded by demokid2000 on Apr 6, 2012

"The Q960 sequencer is connected to the COTK C958 Dual Quantizer which is connected to a Q105 Slew limiter only affecting pitch down. The Q105 is triggered by an LFO so that not all notes has glide. The Q105 is connected to a multiplier and then two Synthesizers.com VCO.'s.

The Q124 Sample and Hold is controlling the shift of the steps of the Q960 for a random effect. The S&H is triggered by the gate of the Q960 and use white noise as input."

Korg MS20 Basic snare drum sound

YouTube Uploaded by demokid2000 on Apr 6, 2012

"A basic snare sound made using the Korg MS-20. The trick is to use the high pass filter to add the punch/snap to the drum sound. Drum sounds are very easy to create on a MS20.
The MS20 can also create pretty decent hand clap sounds using the high pass filter, S&H and some other stuff. I will post a video later."

YouTube Uploaded by demokid2000 on Jul 7, 2011

"I bought my Korg MS20 in 1995. Back then I didn't have time money to buy a MIDI/CV converter. I have always recorded it live. Today 2011-07-07 I finally got a Kenton Pro-2000 and this is the first test after hooking it up. For the first time since 1995 I can play fast, tight bass line. :D"

The q960 also triggers an envelope controlling a Q150 VCF to create a bass drum and triggers the Korg MS20 that is playing a snare drum sound. Sorry for the bad quality, I'm using my Nokia N95."
