Odroid--U3 Meets YouRockGuitar 2

Published on May 25, 2015 elohess2

The Odroid-U3 is a Linux based mini computer. The YouRockGuitar 2 is connected via USB MIDI.

This one in via elohess2. I asked him what software he used for the synth sounds and he had the following to say: "'Yoshemi', which is a fork of ZynAddSubFX. I used Yoshemi cause I was frustrated of my spelling mistakes of 'ZynAddSubFX' :-) (Joke). Was only a test to find out which version works better with JackD. Result: both...."

And the video description:

"Session to show that it works very well to use the Odroid-U3 als a software synthesizer audio machine und using the 'toy' YouRockGuitar2 als Midi Controller.

A lot of things to tell about this combination and the Linux Glue, which glues all the parts together.

At the end of the video 25:00 there is a recorded "live" session. Sorry bad audio quality. It was a reharsal session recorded with the build in microphone of my mobile phone. No additional infos here. Only Peter jamming noise...."

Beyond The Rungler - An experimental Eurorack module based on the heart of the Benjolin

Published on Dec 28, 2014 elohess2

"For more description look here: http://journeytounknownsoundscapes.bl..."

"During my search to find a cool generative (and simple) pattern generator I found the schematic of the Benjolin and here. I will not build a full Benjolin. But what is the heart of the Benjolin? After looking some videos and studies of the schematics, I would say:

The Rungler

It's a sort of CV pattern generator. It works a little bit like a 1 bit random sampler (With a Sample&Hold feature). Samples are taken from an audio source, e.g. the audio output of the voices of the Benjolin or from a noise source (this is what I will describe here) is "sampled" and synchronized by a clock source (or an other trigger).

A serial stream of bits is shifted into a shift register one step per clock cycle.

This serial bit stream is used to feed a parallel digital analog converter in 3 bit resolution. At the end of the circuit a control voltage comes out and can be feeded into synth voices. And there is a feedback loop to replay the samples. The incomming audio confuses the feedback and so new patterns are generated.

Simple."

Krachdingens 2 - It starts to noise

Published on Nov 22, 2014 elohess2

"This is a good end of a strange week.

The first patch played with my new born and growing modular synth system. Only a few modules are now read. A mixture from buyed and selfmade stuff.

The rack does not stand in my studio, it stands now in my workshop cause I'm working on more modules. Recording was done with an old digicam with the build in micro.

This video is more a sort of work in progress documentation. Nothing more.

The sequencer I used is an Arturia Beatstep. Both VCO' are feeded by CV from the beatstep. Only one of the VCOs is routed over a VCF/VCA the other VCO signal is plain feeded into the Klangbau valve VCA.

This VCA creates a very nice, old fashioned valve sound. Worth the money. I like it.

Krachdingens means: unspecified something which makes noise - noise in the negative meaning of 'Mother says: Don't make such a noise.'"

TheDialer - A New Box For My Sound Box

Published on Apr 28, 2013 elohess2·90 videos

"I got an old dialer, monted this good old piece to on of my modules and configured the dialer as a sort of signal interruptor. This video shows the first sound check. I'm not really satisfied with it. Maybe I need more soundsource or a better signal dispatcher. There is a lot of room inside of the box :-)"

Frankensnail - Ready To Rumble

Published on Jan 25, 2013 elohess2·74 videos

"Next Circuit Bending toy is ready. It's again one of th Vtech snail. I've collected a lot of them and plan to join all in "band". Each snail should be different and will have an own name.

This is 'Franksnail'.

Powered by an Arduino sequencer and modulated with signals from some simple CMOS oszillators (Lunettas). This is only a feature demonstration. I've done this video for myself, cause I often have the problem to remember after a while how the toys work, when I use them again after month. :-) The sequencer is based on a source I've written as a plattform for a simple, timing stable sequencer for the Arduinos"

lorenz system - a generative music experiment made with vvvv

Published on Dec 29, 2012 elohess2·73 videos

"Todays project: 'lorenz system'. A generative music video I've made with vvvv. A big patch based on the lorenz attractor. I build a little bit 3d mesh around and developed a sound interpreter for the graphics.

Find out more about the 'Lorenz System' here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenz_system

Switch of the lights in you room and start the video. Relax...

Near the end of the video there is a sceen with about 5000 spheres I reached the limit of the processor. The movement of the spheres is not so smooth. Sorry."

The Tiny Beatereater 2 - Raw Demo

YouTube Uploaded by elohess2 on Mar 17, 2012

"News from the Beateater. Today I've tried to make some optimizsation of my first publish schematics. I added a "signal flatener" to the output of the amp and I added a passive lowpassfilter before the circuit. Now the beateater has a much better response to bass signals like bassdrum and other bassy instruments.

In this demo we see the raw mode. The ATTINY after the amplifier listen only to the flaten output signal and when a high water mark is reached the LED signal rises. In the next step, the alogrithm must be optimized. But this part every DIYer can implement his own ideas. I'll do a "don't response to base for defined time to supress ghost notes" next.

Working with the ATTINY (here a 85) is fine. It's cheap and the programming with an Arduino IDE is possible."

Tiny Beateater 2 - A longer demonstration of the new "Tiny Beateater 2" circuit

"I finshed the project "Tiny Beateater 2" today. The video shows in the beginning some sound sample in which the Beateater triggers my famous "Raidio Lala". And then I start a walk through to the features to show how it works. Also the limits are described. The schematics and the software I'll publish during the next week. So come back and look here for a link. When it is published, I'll post the link here."

Experiments with the Array System Implementation on ICON iStage Keyboard

YouTube Uploaded by elohess2 on Feb 12, 2012

"A new musical experiment. I've made a Array System template for the ICON istage keyboard. The video shows how it works.

At 25:50 you can hear a song jam improvisation with a synthpad sound. This shows how easy it is to make ambient soundscapes with this keyboard layout.

For more information about the "Array System" see here: http://thearraymbira.com/arraysystem.php

Here's a blog about the implementation on the keyboard. In the blog you will find a image how the notes are organized."

Demo of an easy low pass filter for the use in circuit bended toys

YouTube Uploaded by elohess2 on Oct 16, 2011

"A short demonstration of an easy filter circuit I've build on a breadboard. I'm looking for an easy to build one chip filter. This is a dirty circuit. I works als a normal low-pass filter. The Q-factor (resonance) has a very high gain which leads to self oscillation and creating artefact noise. The circuit is based on a LM324 chip. The filter has a Sallen-Key structure with an additional voltage feed on the gain. The video shows how to expand the filter in a circuit bending style with a 555 based LFO. I will publish the schematics next time on my blog and give a link here.

The filter can easy integrated into crackleboxes, cacophonator like boxes or build into the line out of a modified toy."

I Once Was A Mighty Lasersword - Bending a toy lasersword PCB on a cardboard plattform

Uploaded by elohess2 on Sep 8, 2011

"Soundsamples of an experiment. I've got a toy lasersword, I opened it and removed a small PCB with a blob on it. I removed the pitch resistor and added a pot, a lfo and some more dirty electronics. I've made this during hearing a radio show of Wolfang Dorning from Linz. I met Uwe Schüler, Jördis Drawe and Wolfgang in Dresden at the Circuit Bending Festival this year. During this festival I've worked everything on such cardboard "breadboards". It is a simple way to build circuits which can transported in a "half state".
In the vid you hear noises only generated with this board. I've added a delay to the recording. It was a long session, the sound changes during the whole recording. Warning it's noise!"
